What leagues does SALL offer?
SALL offers 5 different leagues based on grade level. All leagues are open to boys and girls residing within the Stoughton Area School District. Skill level does not matter for the SALL leagues. If your child wants to play, they may. Here’s a brief description of each league:
Coach Pitch for Kindergartners – a step up from tee-ball where the coach “soft-tosses” a pitch to the batter. We don’t keep track of outs or runs. Everyone bats and plays defense every inning. Games/practices are held on Saturday mornings starting in May.
Machine Pitch for 1st graders – a pitching machine is used and delivers pitches consistently in the strike zone at a hittable speed. Defensive players try to make outs. Games/practices are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Racetrack Park starting in late April.
Amateurs for 2nd graders – players start the year hitting off the machine, progressing to coach pitch from the mound, and end the season pitching to the opposing team. Amateurs prepares the players for the step to Minors when in 3rd grade. Games/practices are held on Mondays and Wednesday at Racetrack Park starting in late April.
Minors for 3rd & 4th graders – players are introduced to more of the rules of baseball. Players pitch against opposing teams. Games are umpired and score is kept. Games/practices are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Oak Knoll Park starting in mid-April.
Majors for 5th & 6th graders – games are played under full baseball rules, just like on TV only with a smaller diamond. Games are played on Wednesdays at Oak Knoll Park. Practices are held on various nights at various diamonds around town starting in Mid-April.
Is your player looking for more baseball opportunities?
Cal Ripken for 5th & 6th graders – The Cal Ripken team(s) are selected based on a player’s abilities and performance during Cal Ripken tryouts which occur in late April. Games are played on Monday and Friday evenings in against teams from other communities. Rosters are limited to 15 players per team, of which only eight per team can be 12 year olds. There is an additional fee for Cal Ripken which covers the cost of the team jersey, hat and umpires for home games.
Tournament Baseball – Tournament play has been incorporated into the SALL organization. Team formation will be based on age level (not grade) and team rosters may vary from tournament to tournament depending on rules. There will be an age-level tournament director for each age group, (9U through 12U) who will be in charge of tournament registration and rosters. Tournament team coaches will be selected by the SALL Board. There will be an additional fee on a per tournament basis, rather than a one-time up front fee. Any player wishing to participate in tournament play must be on a SALL team.
Anyone interested in coaching Cal Ripken or Tournament teams should send an email request to the SALL Board at: email@example.com
We do not offer competitive opportunities for players younger than 9U (3rd grade) but encourage parents to utilize Stoughton’s many parks, ball diamonds and school playgrounds to get kids out throwing, catching, hitting and running.
