The purpose of this league is to have fun, build confidence and learn to enjoy baseball. Coaches should focus on fundamentals, encourage teamwork and sportsmanship.
Under no circumstances are coaches, players or spectators allowed to argue with an umpire. Talking calmly with an umpire about a play, call, or rules is the responsibility of the coaching staff.
Games last one (1) hour fifteen (15) minutes, no scoring is kept. Play as many innings as possible in the allotted time.
Each team is allowed ten (10) defensive players with four (4) outfielders. The pitcher is positioned as an extra infielder near second base, while the catcher assumes the normal position and returns the ball to the coach.
Free substitution is allowed and all players should get equal playing time.
All attending players must be included in the batting order.
A half (½) inning ends with the third (3rd) out or when all players have batted.
The batter only becomes a runner by hitting a ball. No Walks Allowed.
Machine pitch: Each batter is given up to five (5) pitches to put the ball in play and a sixth (6th) pitch if they hit one (1) of the five (5) pitches foul. No batter may receive more than six (6) pitches per at bat. If the batter fails to hit a ball in fair play after six (6) pitches the at bat is recorded as an out.
Midseason transition to kid pitching: When kid pitch begins, if the pitcher throws four (4) balls then a tee must be used for the remainder of the count. During each at bat, an out will be recorded for three (3) strikes delivered by the pitcher.
*SALL will notify all coaches of midseason practiced dates specifically established to guide the transition from machine pitch to kid pitch.
No base stealing, advancing bases on passed balls, infield fly rule or bunting allowed.
Players should be taught to avoid contact on the base paths and to slide properly.
The person operating the pitching machine shall also act as umpire, making all base calls. This league does not call balls and strikes.
On balls hit to the outfield, the play is over when the ball reaches the infield. Runners may not advance on an overthrow.
In the event of a pitching machine malfunction or failure, the game shall continue from that point using a “coach pitch” format with all the same rules.
When a batted ball hits the pitching machine, the ball is dead, the batter is given a single and all runners advance one base. Thrown balls striking the machine are ruled “dead” with no runners advancing. For safety reasons, please keep players away from the pitching machine.
To help speed the play, the defensive team shall supply and adult coach or volunteer behind the catcher to help retrieve passed balls and assist the batter.
No metal spikes. All players must wear long pants. SALL recommends and encourages all male players to wear protective cups. Catchers must wear a protective cup and use a catcher’s mitt.
Any bat barrel larger than 2 ¼” must have the authorized USA Bat stamp.
Severe Weather: At the sound of a severe weather siren, other official warning, or at first sight of lighting, the game in progress shall be stopped immediately. In the case of rain or wet fields, the coaches are responsible for assessing the playing conditions and making the appropriate decision.
